Cocktail Trends and Statistics
Cocktails are social arts. They bring people together through dynamic flavours and positive vibes. Cocktails are complex beverages that combine spirits, liqueurs, and mixers. This year, social media was flooded with both classic and new combinations.
As pandemic restrictions were lifted, people have become more eager to enjoy cocktails. We’ll discuss the cocktail trends of 2023, from the Negroni Sbagliato to the innovative alcohol-free ingredients.
Menu Engineering Worksheet
This menu engineering worksheet includes complex menu engineering formulas to help you determine the strengths and weaknesses of your restaurant’s food menu.
Classics with a New Elevated Look
The past inspires cocktail menus and mixologists. After the uncertainty caused by the pandemic, comfort comes from familiarity. Retro cocktails such as espresso martinis and old fashioned have been given new life.
Many people are upgrading classic recipes with upgraded flavours. Classic recipes are being updated with new methods of mixing and shaking, large blocks of ice, balls of ice of various sizes, and higher-quality spirits.
Low-ABV Cocktails and Mocktails
The pandemic has also led to a renewed focus on health and wellness. This is why people are now turning to low-ABV and mocktail cocktails.
Many new alcohol-free alternatives have flavors similar to spirits. Home mixologists, bars, and influencers are using these options to create recipes that are more exciting than sparkling grape juice.
Sustainable Plant-Based Ingredients
As the world experiences record-breaking weather, sustainability is on everyone’s minds. Restaurants and bars are looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact and waste. In order to reduce consumption of non-sustainable ingredients, many restaurants and bars are using plant-based alternatives for milk and eggs.
Behind the bar, several steps can be taken to achieve sustainability. Demanding that suppliers use compostable packaging is one way to achieve sustainability. By reducing the carbon footprint, working with local mixers and fruit reduces shipping. Bars can adopt low-waste practices by using biodegradable straws, cups and other supplies.
Dry and Bitter
With a growing awareness of health and wellness among consumers, they are looking for cocktails that contain fewer sugar grams. The industry is also seeing a rise in innovation due to the popularity of more herbaceous and vegetal flavours. Unusual ingredients, such as saline solutions and tomato juice cocktails, are gaining popularity.
Bitter tastes (and bitters!) Also, bitter flavours (and bitters themselves!) are having a moment. Mixologists use liqueurs such as Campari, Aperol and Fernet. Dry vermouth and umami-rich Chinese Baijiu are in.
Canned Cocktails
Cans of cocktails are a great way to satisfy the demand for convenience. However, the pandemic caused people to drink less and host fewer parties, making it less appealing to stock mixers with a short shelf life.
RTD cocktails will grow at a rate of 13.4% per year by 2030. Companies like LiveWire have created RTD cocktails that are far more complex and floral than the classic gin, tequila, or vodka cocktails.
Tequila & Mezcal
Tequila and Mezcal are two of the most popular spirits this year. Global tequila sales are expected to increase from $9.8 to $14.3 billion in 2028. This growth is attributed to the increasing popularity of premium, smooth tequilas that are handcrafted. Food & Wine praised the complexity, time and effort that goes into the aged tequilas.
Mezcal is another agave spirit that has been gaining in popularity. It can be substituted for tequila to make margaritas. The smoky taste profile perfectly balances citrusy and floral cocktail recipes.
Ranch Water
Ranch water has become a popular way to enjoy tequila as sales of the spirit increase. This simple tequila cocktail requires three ingredients: tequila lime juice and sparkling water. Topo Chico mineral waters are the preferred mixer in Texas, where this drink is rumoured to have originated. However, any seltzer can be used. Ranch water has also made a big splash on the RTD cocktail aisle.
Negroni Sbagliato
The Negroni Sbagliato was the most talked about cocktail of 2022 after a TikTok by Game of Thrones actress Emma D’Arcy became viral. This “stunning cocktail” substitutes the classic Negroni’s gin for prosecco and mixes it with Campari, Aperol, and sweet vermouth to create a bitter, velvety drink. This new Negroni Sbagliato cocktail is the drink of choice for thousands of people as a result of a growing demand for bitterer flavours and less sweetness.
Coffee Cocktails
For decades, the espresso martini has been a favourite. It is a mixture of caffeinated coffee and vodka. Irish coffee is also a classic. More coffee-based drinks are being created than ever before. Mixologists have been getting creative by pairing rum, iced espresso and creme de cocoa. Some mix cold brew and sake to make a dairy-free White Russian.
Hibiscus based drinks
Mixologists will be making more than just hot toddies by 2023. Tea is the perfect answer to the trend towards drier flavours. Green and black teas have unique flavours. Tea is bitter by nature. Herbal teas with floral hibiscus go well with sour oranges and gin.
What cocktail trends do you plan to mix in 2023?
Cocktails are gaining popularity as people begin to regain their social life after the pandemic. Many people prefer canned RTD cocktail mixes. Social media is also a great way to introduce fans to celebrity favourites. Consider incorporating some of the latest cocktail trends into your home or restaurant bar as you prepare to enter 2023.
